So today as I was running errands and went through the drive-thru for a quick lunch I was handed a receipt to sign after paying with my credit card. The receipt had a place for me to enter a “tip”!!! AT THE DRIVE THRU!!
Ok, so I have to get on a soap box for minute about this….
It really irks me that people expect a tip for doing their job!
Now before I have some of you leaving nasty comments- let me explain that I don’t find anything wrong with waitresses, pizza delivery guys or anyone that gets paid LESS than minimum wage because their hourly pay compensates for potential tips. (which I think is ridiculous in the first place that they get paid less).
What I’m talking about is how society has changed to think that everyone needs a tip for doing their JOB!
Just because I go thru the drive-thru for lunch and you hand me my food doesn’t mean you are entitled to a tip. If I go to a restaurant where I order and pay, then pick up my own food, eat, and clear my own table, to expect me to pay for a tip is insane!!! A tip is for going above and beyond what your job entails. Just because you may wipe down the tables, call out my number, vacuum the floor or whatever does NOT entitled you to a tip- you were hired to do a job, just because you do it doesn’t mean you need a financial pat on the back. You are not ENTITLED to anything but your paycheck for the hours you worked.
It seems like almost everything out there now expects a tip. Hairstylists, Massages, Paperboy, House cleaners, car wash attendants, and so on. When you are already paying for a service from these people WHY are they expecting you to pay them a tip?!??!? Shouldn’t they be happy that you are giving them service in the first place??? Because without you they would be out of a job.
If we’re going to tip people just for doing their job why don’t we think about tipping Doctors, Lawyers, Police Officers, ect?? The services they provide are MUCH more valuable to society not to mention dangerous.
Tips were made to be a reward for exemplary service, or in some instances as a bribe for better service. It seems society has become so spoiled thinking we “deserve” everything without having to earn it, and in MANY cases people think they should be tipped even when their service is crappy.
Call me cheap- but I just have a hard time paying someone extra for a service I am already paying for. IF someone does impress me in their service and attitude I have no problem rewarding them with a tip. But tipping should not be an obligation you feel because of tradition, especially when the service was less than desirable. Honestly the best tip could be returned service and loyalty bringing them more money, and referrals of friends and family in the future!
As a RET I never expected a tip- they were already paying for my services. Of all my clients I did have a couple pay me extra and say they were so pleased with the results they wanted to tip me. But it was NEVER an expectation.
I WISH I got tipped for living my life doing what’s expected of me. Maybe I should put out a tip jar on the kitchen counter for my family to show their appreciation.

ok, climbing down off my soap box…. 🙂

So… I agree with you-mostly. I don't think it is a new thing that paperboys and hairstylists get tips though.I just think this part of the world is slow to catch up. I don't tip people who do hair out of their home, but would tip a stylist at a salon. The people who should get tips are those who provide personal service, but get paid from an employer rather than directly from you. This is why we don't tip doctors, lawyers, or the lady who cuts hair out of her home. We pay them directly. This is what makes sense to me.
I do think tipping in the drive through is absurd. I also think that what goes around, comes around and that paying generously when a tip is actually deserved (ie server's, pizza delivery, etc) benefits everyone. I'm a happy tipper. 🙂
I completely 100% agree with you! Well said!!
As a Hair dresser I'm going to comment on this one…. I do charge a flat rate when I do a service. I have a full range of cliental which I value. Each of them tip according to their budget and some rather well. It is not expected but it is a nice way to remind me I'm doing a good job at making my living! I always tip if the service is great! So, I must have good karma! I also waitrest @ a buffett. The cheapest people eat at buffets and let their kids leave a nasty mess, and not tip. I still made min wage and yet spent 20 min cleaning up after their slob children because their parents were too lazy and cheap to pick up or pay to have some one else do it cause they thought it was my "job". It is always an extra when tips are received and you would be suprised the diffence it makes in the service they receive and the impact it has on me being a single mother. I hope you will think twice when your hair is done or another service is done well. You never know how much they are actually making or what their costs are in their job title.
Was it a drive-thru of a restaurant that also had a "sit down" dining room? I used to be a waitress at this type of restaurant. There was a dining room where you were waited on and also a drive-thru. The computers worked so it printed the same type of receipt for both. Otherwise, you're right – that's ridiculous!
