Between a Rock and a Future: Guiding Teens Through Big Decisions
March 25, 2026From One Garden to a Whole Education
One of my favorite things about homeschooling is how one simple activity can turn into an entire education.
In this picture, that activity was gardening.
What started as a basic lesson, learning how gardens work, quickly grew into something so much more.
We began with the basics: preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering, and weeding. The girls learned patience as they waited for things to grow, responsibility as they cared for the plants daily, and observation as they watched for changes.
And then… harvest came.
We were all surprised when we picked well over 100 pumpkins and spaghetti squash.
That alone felt like a huge win but the learning didn’t stop there. In many ways, it was just getting started.
Learning Beyond the Garden
What I love most about homeschooling is that learning doesn’t stay in a box.
From this one experience, the girls learned:
- Planning and organization – deciding what to plant, where, and how to manage it
- Science concepts – pollination, cross-pollination, and companion planting
- Weather and seasons – how timing and conditions affect growth
- Problem-solving – adjusting when things didn’t go as expected
But it didn’t stop with science.
Real Life Skills That Actually Matter
Once the harvest came in, we moved into some of the most meaningful lessons.
We brought the squash into the kitchen and started cooking, baking, and preserving. This naturally introduced:
- Home economics skills – preparing meals from scratch
- Health and nutrition – understanding what we’re eating and where it comes from
- Resourcefulness – using what we had instead of letting it go to waste
And then came one of the most exciting parts for the girls…
Turning Learning Into Opportunity
We had more than we could possibly use.
So instead of letting it sit, we decided to sell the surplus.
Suddenly, this gardening project became a lesson in:
- Supply and demand
- Pricing and value
- Communication and confidence
- Entrepreneurship
They weren’t just learning about money, they were earning it.
And that changes everything.
The Kind of Learning That Sticks
At the end of it all, we sat down together and talked about everything we had learned.
Not just gardening.
Not just cooking.
But how all of it connects.
That’s my favorite part of homeschooling, those moments where learning becomes bigger than the subject itself.
We’re not just teaching isolated topics.
We’re raising children who:
- Know how to problem solve
- Can see connections in everyday life
- And learn how to make the most out of every situation
It’s Never Just One Lesson
What started as “let’s plant a garden” turned into science, math, life skills, business, and more.
And the best part?
It didn’t feel overwhelming.
It felt natural.
It felt meaningful.
And it’s exactly why I believe so strongly in this kind of learning.
Because when you teach your children how to learn, not just what to memorize,
they carry that with them for life.
