Raising Siblings Who Actually Like Each Other

This Counts as School Too… If You Make It One
May 4, 2026We arrived in the small village of Mungano (in Kenya, Africa) on my birthday.
I didn’t expect anything special.
In fact, I didn’t expect anyone there to even know.
A Welcome I’ll Never Forget
But when we arrived…
The entire village welcomed us.
There was singing.
Dancing.
Hugs.
This was a normal welcoming from the village.
And then somehow, they found out it was my birthday.
Before I knew it…
The whole village was singing to me.
(and splashed some bottled water on me which is a tradition of theirs)
Throughout the day I had been sung to multiple times, with 3 different traditional songs.
It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments you never forget.
The Voice in the Distance
After that day…
Something small, but powerful, started happening.
Every day, I would hear a little voice in the distance:
“Happy Birthday!”
I would look around…
But with so many children and people nearby, I could never figure out who it was.
It happened again.
And again.
Sometimes more than once a day.
Always the same little voice.
What Made It Even More Special
In that village, children don’t begin learning English until around 3rd or 4th grade.
By the time they’re in kindergarten, they already speak at least two languages.
So English is often their third… or even fourth language.
Which means…
Those two words likely meant something.
The Moment I Finally Saw Her
On our last day, as we were preparing to leave…
A little girl came up behind me and said:
“Happy Birthday!”
And in that moment…
I finally knew.
She had been the voice all along.
The Part That Stayed With Me
Out of all the things she could have said…
Those were the words she remembered.
The words she connected to me.
The words she chose to repeat…
Day after day.
What This Taught Me
Sometimes, it’s the smallest voices…
That carry the biggest meaning.
And Sometimes… That Applies to Us Too
Homeschooling can feel overwhelming.
Busy.
Noisy.
Full of responsibilities.
But every once in a while…
There’s a quiet thought.
A small idea.
A little nudge you can’t quite explain.
Don’t Ignore That Voice
Those thoughts, the ones that keep coming back…
They matter.
They might be:
- inspiration
- direction
- a reminder
That you are:
- seen
- known
- valued
Even when you don’t always feel like it.
Final Thought
That little girl probably didn’t realize the impact she had.
But I’ll never forget her.
Because Sometimes…
The smallest voice…
Is the one we’re meant to hear the most.
