August 15, 2026John Adams (1735-1826) – Second President; champion of independence.
John Adams was born in 1735 in Massachusetts. A lawyer by training, he became one of the most passionate and persuasive voices for American independence.
Adams famously defended the British soldiers accused in the Boston Massacre, because he believed everyone deserved a fair trial, even when it made him unpopular. He later pushed hard for independence in the Continental Congress and helped persuade others to support the cause.
He served as the first Vice President under Washington and then became the second President. As President he worked to keep the young nation out of a war with France. He and his wife Abigail exchanged hundreds of letters that give us one of the best windows into the founding era.
Adams was honest, stubborn, and devoted to the rule of law. He valued principle over popularity throughout his career.
