August 20, 2026James Madison (1751-1836) – Father of the Constitution; Fourth President.
James Madison was born in 1751 in Virginia. Small in stature and soft-spoken, he was one of the deepest thinkers among the founders, with an extraordinary knowledge of history and government.
Madison is called the Father of the Constitution because he did more than anyone to shape it. He arrived at the Constitutional Convention with a detailed plan, took careful notes throughout, and argued for a strong but balanced federal government with checks and balances.
He also wrote many of the Federalist Papers to convince states to ratify the Constitution, and he drafted the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments. He later served as Secretary of State and then as the fourth President, leading the country through the War of 1812.
Madison believed that good government had to account for human nature, including the temptation to abuse power. His design of the Constitution reflects that careful, realistic thinking.
