Homeschool Curriculum That Covers All Core Subjects
October 8, 2026The second Monday of October has two names in the United States, and both are worth understanding. Columbus Day remembers the voyages that connected Europe and the Americas. Indigenous Peoples Day honors the many native nations who were already here. Looking at both gives children a fuller, more honest picture of history, and a chance to practice seeing a story from more than one side.
Two Ways to Remember October
In 1492, an explorer named Christopher Columbus sailed west from Spain hoping to reach Asia and instead reached islands in the Caribbean. His voyages opened lasting contact between Europe and the Americas, a turning point that changed both sides of the world. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937, and generations of children learned the rhyme, In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
Over time, many people pointed out that the Americas were already home to millions of people in thriving nations long before 1492. Indigenous Peoples Day was created to honor those native cultures and their history. Today some places observe one holiday, some the other, and some recognize both.
Teaching Both Sides in Your Homeschool
This holiday is a wonderful chance to practice an important skill: looking at history from different perspectives. Children can admire the courage it took to cross an unknown ocean while also respecting the people and cultures that were already flourishing here. It is worth remembering that crops first grown by native peoples, such as corn, potatoes, tomatoes, and chocolate, would later feed the entire world.
You do not have to settle every debate to teach this well. The goal is simply to help kids understand that history often has more than one side, and that careful thinkers try to understand all of them.
