Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804) – First Treasury Secretary; architect of the financial system.
Alexander Hamilton was born around 1755 in the Caribbean, orphaned young and largely self-made. His brilliance earned him a scholarship to study in New York, where he threw himself into the revolutionary cause.
During the war, Hamilton became a trusted aide to General Washington. Afterward, he became one of the most important architects of the new government. He wrote the majority of the Federalist Papers, the essays that explained and defended the Constitution.
As the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton built the financial foundation of the United States. He created a national bank, established the country’s credit, and set up systems still in use today. His vision of a strong central government often clashed with Jefferson and Madison.
Hamilton’s life ended tragically in a duel with Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804. His ideas about finance and federal power shaped the nation permanently.
