A Lesson That Crossed Cultures (and Started with Bubble Gum)

The Day Bubble Gum Became a Classroom

Sometimes the best lessons aren’t planned.

They just happen.

A Simple Idea

While we were visiting a classroom in Kenya, we brought something small to share:

Bubble gum.

At first, it was just meant to be fun.

A simple treat.

A way to connect.

Then Something Happened

We started showing them how to blow bubbles.

And just like that…

It turned into a lesson.

Learning Without Even Realizing It

As they practiced, we talked about:

  • Circumference – how big can the bubble get?
  • Volume – how much air does it take?
  • Mass – how much gum works best?

But it didn’t stop there.

The Real Lessons

They were:

  • laughing
  • trying
  • failing
  • trying again

And that’s where the real learning happened.

Because they were also learning:

  • patience
  • persistence
  • timing
  • confidence

No Textbook Required

There were no worksheets.

No desks lined up perfectly.

No formal lesson plan.

Just a group of kids…

A piece of bubble gum…

And a willingness to try something new.

What This Reminded Me

Education doesn’t have to look a certain way to be effective.

It doesn’t have to be:

  • structured
  • complicated
  • or perfectly planned

Sometimes…

The most meaningful lessons come from the simplest moments.

Why This Matters

As homeschool parents, it’s easy to feel like we need:

  • the perfect curriculum
  • the perfect plan
  • the perfect schedule

But moments like this remind us:

👉 Learning is everywhere.

Final Thought

That day, we didn’t just share bubble gum.

We shared:

  • laughter
  • curiosity
  • connection

And a lesson that none of us will forget.

Because Sometimes…

All it takes is something small…

To create something meaningful.
